ABOUT

I’m a Hobart-based painter. I make portraits and figurative work that circle around memory, masculinity, nostalgia and place, particularly the strange, sentimental mythology of growing up in Tasmania.

I’ve held multiple solo exhibitions at Penny Contemporary in Hobart, as well as exhibiting in London, Launceston and Canberra. I’ve been a finalist in a number of portrait and contemporary art prizes over the years, including the RACT Portrait Prize (runner-up) and several national prizes.

Alongside my studio practice, I teach senior secondary and IB Visual Arts. Teaching keeps me honest.

Outside the studio, I’m interested in design, architecture, typography, swimming, and building creative projects that connect people,  exhibitions, community ideas, slightly ambitious schemes. I care deeply about Tasmanian culture and about creating opportunities for artists here.

Mostly though, I’m just trying to make paintings that feel true, even when they’re a bit stupid.
